What is a Construction Skills Card?

CSCS is the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry. These cards act as proof that workers on construction sites are qualified and have the correct training for a specific line of work.

As part of the scheme, a database of those who have achieved or are committed to achieving a construction related qualification is kept. Most principal contractors and major house builders require construction workers on their sites to hold a valid CSCS card, even though it is not a legislative requirement.

You can use the CSCS Card Checker on their website.

How do I renew my Skills Card?

There are a few simple steps to take to renew your CSCS card. You will need to demonstrate you have the correct training and qualifications needed for your particular job role, and you need to pass the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test.

The type of test you do and the qualifications you need to demonstrate will depend on which CSCS card you are applying for. This, in turn, will depend on your qualifications, job role, and any professional body membership you might have. If, therefore, you change job role, you will need to seek advice as you might need to change your CSCS card. Use the Cardfinder to check which card and test are right for you.

You can order your card directly with the CSCS Contact Centre on 0344 994 4777.

Please note that CSCS cards can only be renewed 6 months prior to the expiry date and up to 6 months after the expiry date and that the expiry date of the new card will be as if the card was renewed on time.
